Learning While Moving

I have an incredibly difficult time sitting still while I am learning. “Studies on ADHD in educational settings indicate that a student’s motivation for learning is significantly related with the student’s grade point average” (Simon-Dack et al., 2016, p. 775). This study and concept is something I am exceedingly passionate about and reflects almost daily in my life. I did not perform to my fullest potential which was reflected in my grades during my undergraduate studies. I was unmotivated to learn and unaware of how I learn best. However, once I started graduate school, I was tremendously motivated, did research, and learned the best way to study for my specific learning needs. I learned that sitting to write a paper, read articles, and study was excruciating for me. Right after I started graduate school about a year and a half ago, I invested in a walking treadmill and standing desk. This treadmill and desk gave me immense motivation to study. I noticed that walking while I study helps my brain subconsciously focus on walking, which then prevents my thoughts from swirling and brain from getting distracted. I fully acknowledge that the walking treadmill and standing desk were expensive investments, but they were worth every penny. It is safe to say I have my money’s worth.
